How fast and how far private jets fly

Speed and range depend on the aircraft category. The figures below are the typical planning numbers we use when we quote a trip; actual speed and distance change with winds, altitude, weather, passengers and bags. For route planning we also keep a margin of roughly 15% on range, so we never plan a flight to its limit.

As an example, New York to La Romana is about 1,370 nautical miles, comfortably inside the range of a light jet. A nautical mile is about 1.15 statute miles.

Luggage, golf clubs and pets

Baggage space varies by aircraft model and configuration, and it is usually more generous than on an airline. Tell us what you are bringing when you request a quote and we confirm capacity before you commit.

  • Everyday luggage: usually fine on any category, but a full cabin of passengers can fill the hold on a light jet.
  • Golf clubs, skis and other bulky items: count them and tell us, because they can call for a larger cabin. See Casa de Campo golf.
  • Pets: most operators welcome pets in the cabin. Rules for health and import documents differ by destination, so we confirm them for your route.
  • Child seats and mobility equipment: let us know in advance so the aircraft and ground transfer are ready.

When to arrive at the terminal

Private terminals are far quicker than airline check-in. For many domestic flights you can arrive as little as 15 to 30 minutes before departure, and some terminals will drive you to the aircraft. International flights need more time for passport and customs checks, so we send exact timings and the terminal address with your itinerary.

Frequently asked

Questions, answered plainly.

How do I charter a private jet?

Send us your route, dates, passenger count and bags. You receive aircraft options and an itemised quote, usually within 15 minutes. When you choose, we handle the agreement with the operator and coordinate the terminal, ground transport and any customs. See how private jet charter works.

How do I choose the right plane for my flight?

Start with passengers, luggage and distance, then decide how much cabin space you want. Light jets suit up to six people on shorter routes, midsize and super-midsize jets add room, and heavy jets cover long distances and larger groups. We recommend an aircraft for your exact trip.

How fast is a private jet?

Typical cruise speeds run from roughly 510 mph on a midsize jet to about 590 mph on an ultra-long-range jet. Headwinds, altitude and weather change the real figure, so flight times are always estimates.

How far can a private jet fly?

It depends on the category: up to about 1,800 nautical miles for a light jet, 2,800 for a midsize, 3,600 for a super-midsize, and 5,000 or more for heavy and ultra-long-range jets. Payload, winds and reserves reduce the real range, so we confirm it for your itinerary.

How much luggage can I take on a private jet?

More than on an airline in most cases, but it varies by aircraft. Tell us the number of bags when you request a quote and we confirm the hold capacity for the aircraft you choose.

Can I bring golf clubs or skis?

Yes. Bulky items take space, so tell us how many when you inquire. On a larger group trip they can tip the choice toward a bigger cabin.

How early should I arrive for a private flight?

For many domestic flights, 15 to 30 minutes before departure is enough at a private terminal. International flights need more time for passport and customs checks, and we give you exact timings.

Can I fly with my pet?

Most operators allow pets in the cabin. Rules for health and import documents differ by destination, so tell us when you request a quote and we confirm what your route requires.

How much is a private jet flight?

It is priced mainly by flight time and aircraft size. As a rough guide, light jets start around $4,500 to $6,000 per flight hour and heavy jets reach $12,000 to $20,000 or more, before positioning, fees and taxes. On one-way trips the aircraft usually has to reposition, which can add roughly a third. See the full cost guide.

How far in advance should I book a private jet?

A few days is usually enough, and last-minute flights are often possible. For holidays and peak Caribbean weeks, two to four weeks ahead gives you the best choice of aircraft and price.

Is a private jet rental the same as a charter?

Yes. People say rental, charter, private plane hire or air charter for the same thing: booking a whole aircraft for your trip. You pay for the flight you take, with no membership.

Do you offer jet cards or memberships?

No. We work pay-as-you-go, with no memberships, jet cards or long-term commitments.

Can I book a one-way private jet flight?

Yes. One-way trips are common. Because the aircraft may have to reposition, a one-way price can be a larger share of a round trip, which is why flexible dates and empty leg flights can help.
