What is an empty leg flight?
When a charter client flies one way, the aircraft usually has to return to base or position for its next trip. That return or repositioning flight carries no passengers — an empty leg.
Operators would rather fill that leg than fly it empty, so some are offered to the market at a reduced charter price. You still get the whole aircraft; you simply fit your trip to a route and time that already exists.
The trade-off: price versus flexibility
Because an empty leg is set by someone else's trip, you do not choose the departure time or route freely. The savings can be meaningful, but they vary by route, season and demand, and we will never promise a discount before we have a real option in hand.
Empty legs can also change. If the original client alters their plans, the repositioning flight moves or disappears. For that reason empty legs suit travellers who can adapt, and are a poor fit for fixed events or tight connections.
Why empty legs are common in the Caribbean
High-season travel creates strong one-directional flows: aircraft carry clients south to Casa de Campo, Punta Cana and the islands, then return north without passengers. The same happens in reverse at the end of a holiday week.
That makes the routes between the New York area, South Florida and the Dominican Republic a natural place to look for repositioning flights, especially around the start and end of peak weeks.
How to get the most from an empty leg
- Share a flexible window — for example "any day Thursday to Sunday" — rather than a single date.
- Be open to nearby airports on either end, such as Teterboro or White Plains.
- Travel light on timing, not on comfort: you still fly a whole aircraft with its own crew.
- Keep a backup plan for fixed commitments, in case the leg changes.
- Ask us to watch your route. We match your dates against what operators are repositioning rather than sending you a generic list.
Frequently asked
Questions, answered plainly.
Are empty leg flights really cheaper?
They can be, because the operator is selling a flight that would otherwise carry no revenue. The saving depends on route, season and how close the departure is, so it is never guaranteed. We compare any empty leg against a standard one-way charter quote so you can see the difference.
Can I choose the time and route of an empty leg?
Not freely. The route and timing are set by the original booking. You can sometimes negotiate small changes with the operator, but you should treat the departure window as fixed.
Can an empty leg flight be cancelled or changed?
Yes. Because it depends on another client's itinerary, an empty leg can move or be withdrawn. We tell you as soon as we hear of a change and help you rebook on a standard charter if needed.
Are empty legs available between New York and the Dominican Republic?
They appear regularly around peak travel weeks. Share your flexible dates and we will watch for matching repositioning flights to La Romana, Punta Cana and Santo Domingo.
Is the whole aircraft mine on an empty leg?
Yes. An empty leg is a full private charter priced at a reduced rate. You do not share the cabin with other passengers.
